Purposeful Ecology, Journal of Animal Ecology, Journal of Ecology, Strategies in Ecology and Evolution and Folks and Nature are in search of proposals for a cross-journal Particular Characteristic on “Massive Scale, Open Information, and a Massive Tent: Leveraging collaboration, transparency, and inclusion to advance macrosystems biology”

The sector of macrosystems biology research ecological phenomena that happen and work together inside nested spatial scales: plot, native, panorama, regional, continental, and world. Analysis on this subject is essential in our period of worldwide change, as actionable science at these spatial scales is required to tell environmental coverage and administration and tackle the world’s most urgent environmental issues, reminiscent of habitat destruction and biodiversity loss.

Whereas the growing attain of such tasks (paired with growing collaboration throughout nations) highlights the rising significance and impression of macrosystems biology within the subject of ecology, conducting ecological science at giant spatial scales to addresses these issues presents many challenges. These challenges embody creating efficient collaborative analysis groups throughout disparate areas, language boundaries, interoperability amongst establishments, advancing range, fairness, and inclusion in staff science; utilizing and creating FAIR knowledge (findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable), and following the CARE rules (collective profit, authority to regulate, accountability, ethics) when working with Indigenous knowledge. 

On this particular characteristic, we purpose to publish a sequence of articles that tackle these challenges, producing novel analysis and approaches that advance the sphere of macrosystems biology.  

We notably welcome contributions which: 

1) Advance the sphere of macrosystems biology by analyzing how ecological phenomena work together throughout a number of spatial and temporal scales, 

2) Display the significance of worldwide collaboration in giant scale ecological analysis,  

3) Use knowledge collected by and/or leverage knowledge produced by analysis infrastructure tasks like eLTER, NEON, SAEON, CERN, TERN, FluxNet, ForestGEO, CZOnet, LTERnet, or comparable networks.
